Guatemala

Rotaractors from across District 5050 fundraised $80,000 for an international service trip to Guatemala in August of 2019. It all started with an Idea, one Rotarian who saw the excitement and passion within the Rotaractors surrounding him. He proposed an idea to one of our clubs about going to Guatemala with Hands for Peacemaking. Weeks went by and before we knew it we were planning fundraisers, organizing a trip, booking flights all in anticipation to put ourselves to work. 24 Rotaractors from across District 5050 were headed for beautiful Guatemala.

One 11 hour flight and an 18-hour bus ride later we arrived in the state of Huehuetenango and to the city of Barillas. We began our introduction to the project at the Hands for Peacemaking mission house. Afterward, the majority of our time was spent in a village called Cementario Jolomontaj. Fortunately, with the amount of Rotaractors we had, and the level of efficiency 24 of us produced, we successfully installed a total of 88 clean-burning stoves spreading through three villages.

Three of our members Carter, Jaymee and Eric were able to be a part of this amazing trip and experience. It was an incredible journey, we met some amazing people, played with the children in the village, got to know some of the families, and worked so hard to help the communities we served. We are all extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to experience service on an international level and hope to be able to do it again someday.

Random Acts of Kindness

RAK week runs every year around RAK Day February 17th. RAK in our community has been one of our clubs favourites ways to spread joy during such a wonderful week. Check out below what we have done for RAK week.

RAK week 2019

We celebrated Random Acts of Kindess Week from February 17th-23rd within our community, and what a great week it was. We started our week off with a trip to the City of Port Coquitlam Firehall #1 where we delivered Tim Hortons coffee and donuts to the fireman on duty early Sunday morning. They were very grateful for the gesture of kindness afterwards, we headed to Starbucks and spent the rest of the morning preparing cards for another RAK!

On Monday we paid a visit to some of the residents staying at the Eagle Ridge Manor in Port Moody where we delivered kindness cards and got to talk to a few of the residents. It was super nice for us to be able to interact with and visit them.

On Tuesday one of our rotaractors delivered flower arrangments to a few of the schools in our community to show appreciation for the teachers and all the hard work they put into educating children and youth. Thank you teachers of SD43, we appreciate you!

On Wednesday we got together and delivered treats to all 4 firehalls in Coquitlam! We interrupted dinner at a few of the halls but the firemen were kind enough to let us snag a picture in front of one of the trucks! Thank you Coquitlam Firemen!

The remainder of our week was spent doing smaller acts of kindness to our coworkers at work and even in our local starbucks while grabbing coffee. Overall it was a wonderful week of kindness and we look forward to spreading kindness all year round!
